 2011 Fashion Thoughts

Happy New Year dear readers! 2011 was full of great fashion moments, inspiring street styles and shocking designer changes. Here are some fashion thoughts of mine on 2011.

Biggest fashion moment was probably Kate Middleton stepping out of the car in her Alexander McQueen wedding dress. I absolutely loved it and am happy that such a beautiful dress will go down in history.

Models that impressed me this year were Frida Gustavsson, Lindsay Wixson, Constance Jablonski, Miranda Kerr, and Bambi Northwood-Blyth. I was dosappointed by the lack of Natasha Poly, hope to see her more often in 2012.

The trend of 2011 was definitely color blocking, and it was fun, but I am over it. Give me pastels, black, and prints, please.

Biggest fashion shock of 2011? Mister John Galliano. WTF was he thinking? It is very sad that we will not see more of his talent, although I do think that his best times at Dior were over long before his ‘mishap’.

The best street style 2011 award would go to Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Miranda Kerr. They just never failed to impress. It’s like they were born elegant and effortlessly chic.

Best cover of 2011? I have no idea. There were lots of good ones, but also lots of really bad ones. I always enjoy Vogue Australia’s covers and Vogue Turkey hardly ever disappoints as well.

Best make up at a fashion show? I adored the matte pink lips at Fendi and the hair at Valentino.

That’s about all I can come up with right now. I would love to hear your fashion thoughts on 2011! Leave a comment if you want :)

The Return of Pastels

t13243683141759403 11 The Return of Pastels

Thank you, Marc Jacobs, for using a wide range of pastel colors in your spring/summer 2012 collection, because everyone seems to copy you now. Let’s dramatically call it ‘the return of pastel’. 2011 was not the year of light baby blue, cotton candy pink, and mint green. Instead, we sported bright neon colors and even mixed them (hello, Color Blocking).

Personally, I’ve had enough of looking like a rainbow and rather want to look like ice cream again. So hurray for pastels! My fashion senses tell me that pastels will be big next summer as you can see the trend in editorials already. The Louis Vuitton campaign kind of started it and everyone follows…

Books for Christmas

picture 4 Books for Christmas

Less than two weeks until christmas and some of you are probably wrecking their brains trying to think of a good christmas gift for a friend. Well, a good book is always a treat and for everyone who isn’t into novels (like me), there are quite a few random books out there that I think would make really lovely gifts.

For the fashionistas among us, there is Icons of Fashion which kind of serves as an encyclopedia of fashion icons of the 20th century. For the more creative and crafty ones, I recommend Fashion Frocks, which shows some of the most iconic dresses of all time and offers patterns for recreating them! How cool is that?

And then there are two other books that I just have to tell you about, one is a classic, and the other is so random and cute that it’s hard to ignore. Let’s start with the classic. Where’s Wally used to be one of my favorite books when I was a child and I still find pleasure in trying to find that funny little guy. I’m sure a lot of people would love this as a christmas gift!

And the last one, no need for a lot of words, just look at it. It’s an entire book about the cutest dog in the world, Boo. Yes. That’s it. Photos of Boo in different daily situations. Adorable, funny, and most of all, very random. Perfect as a gift!

All books are available at Urban Outfitters.

If you were editor in chief of Vogue Australia and had shot this beautiful editorial with Valentina Zelyaeva , would you choose a mediocre reprint as the cover of the January issue? Probably not, but that’s what Kirstie Clements did and it leaves me speechless, because the editorial “The Wanderers”, shot in Puerto Rico by Pilcher, must be one of the best of 2011. There are so many 90s inspired shots that could have made an epic cover, so I’m more than disappointed that what we got isĀ this.

The behind the scenes video of the making of the editorial is worth watching as well, you can find it here

Tights and Socks and What to Do With Them

photo1 Tights and Socks and What to Do With Them

This weekend, I finally organized my tights and socks. What’s there to organize, you might ask. Well, basically all my socks and tights were just thrown in a corner that no one could see before and I found myself hectically looking for the right pair every morning. But then, I had this awesome idea. My mum once gave me this hanger with holes that apparently is supposed to be used for scarves. Instead of hanging scarves on it, I just hung my tights through the holes and even organized them according to colors. That will hopefully save me some time in the morning. My socks, on the other hand, are still a mess… if anyone has tips on how to organize socks, let me know!

Ho Ho Holiday Campaigns!

laeticia Ho Ho Holiday Campaigns!

Less than four weeks until christmas! I have to admit, I’m not in the holiday mood yet, mostly because of the warm weather that we’ve been experiencing here lately, but I always love to look at the winter campaigns, especially the ones that look festive. Of course, Tiffany & Co delivers wonderful christmas campaigns and this year’s is no exception. Laetitia Casta walks down the steps of what I think is the New York Library in a beauuutiful gown while it’s snowing and is holding the hand of a handsome guy. Sigh!

Another snowy picture was chosen for the Banana Republic campaign. Yes, it looks staged and fake and too happy, BUT… isn’t that what christmas is like? ;)

And then there are the campaigns that aren’t shot in a wintery scenery, yet remind the viewer of christmas nevertheless, because of the party outfits. The H&M holiday campaign pretty much looks the same every year to be honest and even though that’s a bit boring, it still works somehow. My favorite pic this year is the one with Edita Vilkeviciute; she just makes that cheap dress look a hundred bucks more expensive.

Another pretty example of a good holiday campaign is the H by Halston one. Pretty model, pretty set, pretty shoes, thats all you need! So? Can you feel the holiday spirit?

Still Want Versace for H&M?

campaign 8 Still Want Versace for H&M?

To everyone who wasn’t able to snatch what they wanted from the Versace for H&M collection: Do NOT pay ridiculous prices on ebay because you think it’s sold out everywhere. It’s not. On saturday afternoon, I went to a H&M in Amsterdam and what I saw proved to me what I had been thinking the whole time. The Versace for H&M collection is just too damn ugly to sell out quickly. The Amsterdam store pretty much still had the complete collection more than two days after the launch. There was everything from dresses to bags to shoes, everything in all sizes except for the leather jackets. People didn’t seem interested at all in the tacky plastic bags and jewellery and I didn’t buy anything either. Here’s hoping for a more classy designer collaboration next year, what about Chloe or Alexander McQueen? So if you still want to have a piece from Versace for H&M, make sure you check out your stores for ‘leftovers’ and returns.

Note to myself: Combine preppy blouse and sweater with black leather skirt and manly coat! It’s that simple! Alright… it probably helps to look like Miranda Kerr to really pull off that look and her amazing bordeaux Prada bag that shes been carrying everywhere lately makes the outfit quite expensive, but I’m still very inspired by Miranda’s latest off-duty looks!

Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show 2011 - Best Looks

Filed Under (Fashion, Models) by Nadine on 11-11-2011

I know there are thousands of sources out there where you can read about yesterday’s Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show 2011, so I’m not gonna bore you with the obvious, like Miranda and the fantasy bra etc, but tell you about my favorite facts and looks of the show.

First of all, the model cast. There were quite a lot of newbies on the VS runway this year, and although I don’t care for a lot of them, my personal highlight was Toni Garrn. To me, she had the most adorable outfit - if not the best - and just made VS look less tacky. Being the beauty that she is, Toni is perfect for VS and it was about time she turned 18 to do the show.

Other great outfits included Adriana Lima’s black wings with the purple lingerie (fierce!) and Erin’s pink fishy wings (the color just suited her so well!). Of course the majority of outfits were tacky as hell and absolutely over the top, but hey, that’s why we all love VS, right?

As for the music choices, I’m semi-happy. Aparently the opening song was Taylor Momsen’s band The pretty reckless’ “Make me wanna die” , which I looove and imagine to be really good for VS. But then there were terrible choices like Rhianna’s California Kind Bed, aka snooze fest…

Now, all we have to hope for is that the editors at CBS aren’t stoned as in 08 and make the best out of 45 minutes. Fingers crossed for the final product which airs on Nov 29!

Anna Wintour’s Fashion Forecast

picture 11 Anna Wintours Fashion Forecast

As you might have read on numerous other blogs last week, Anna Wintour, editor in chief of US Vogue, turned 62. Fashionologie collected 62 pictures of her smiling for her birthday and as I was looking through all of them, I noticed a couple of pictures from the 80s and 90s that showed Anna in outfits that couldn’t be any more trendy today.

It is surprising how fashion repeats itself every now and then. And I don’t mean just some colors or cuts or fabrics, no, I mean that complete outfits that you see on the red carpets nowadays were pretty much worn by Anna Wintour 20 years ago. Take for example the black see through top that she wore in 1991. It could come straight out of Stella McCartneys last winter collection.

Or what about the orange silk skirt combined with a black round neck sweater and a classic Chanel bag worn in 1988? I can see Olivia Palermo or any other socialite wearing this today.

Last but not least, the rainbow colored sequin dress that I would die to wear, as well as probably Katy Perry. Well, Anna wore it in 1990. And that is why she is the most powerful woman in the fashion industry.
